Carolina Mudcats News Release

Montgomery, AL --- A pair of unearned runs in the seventh unwrapped a potential first Double-A win for Carolina's Luis Montano, as the Montgomery Biscuits rallied past the Mudcats 3-1 before 6,525 fans at Riverwalk Stadium on Friday night.

Montano (L, 0-6), who has lost all six of his Southern League starts, carried a two-hit shutout in to the bottom of the seventh, and led 1-0 before the Biscuits (28-32) began their unearned surge. Montano walked the first batter, then issued a wild pitch. Matt Fields then chopped a grounder to third baseman Jose Castro, who uncharacteristically threw it away at first base, a throw that jumped into the stands to permit the tying run to score. After a flyball pushed Fields to third, Cody Strait lifted a 2-2 curveball into the left field corner for a sacrifice fly to give Montgomery a 2-1 lead. Montano, who lowered his ERA from 7.53 to 6.11, was taken out of the game for Ruben Medina, who promptly hit the next batter on his first pitch, then yielded a double to score an insurance run for a 3-1 Biscuits lead after seven innings.

Carolina (21-40) managed to put the tying and leading runs on in the ninth against Matt Gorgen thanks to a pair of walks, but Shaun Cumberland and Carson Kainer were retired to end the game.

Aneury Rodriguez (W, 9-10), who started the season 2-8, won his fifth straight decision, working seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball to notch the victory.

The Mudcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a tapper by Logan Parker that bounced toward the pitcher's mound. Cumberland broke home from third base, and when Rodriguez's glove-flip to his catcher appeared to arrive in time for the out, Cumberland's slide knocked the ball from Jose Lobaton's mitt to score the game's first run.

Jerry Gil (2-3, 9.39) starts the series' second game Saturday night at 8:05 PM ET against Ryan Morse (3-6, 5.26) from Riverwalk.
