Johnson City Doughboys News Release
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - A Logan Sutter walk-off home run capped a comeback for the Doughboys as they took down Elizabethton, 14-11, on Wednesday.
The ballgame would start how four of the last five have for Johnson City: with a first-inning run. Cody Miller singled, then stole his league-leading seventh base to set himself up to take advantage of a wild pitch, giving the Doughboys a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not sit for long, as Elizabethton's Skylar King would do the exact same thing, walking, stealing two bases, then scoring on a single to tie it all up at one.
Runs did not come at a premium Wednesday, as the third inning drew even more Johnson City runs. Christian Toledo doubled to lead off the inning, then use an error following a Danny Infante single to retake the lead. Infante would find his way home later in the inning from a Braden Spano single, making it 3-1 Doughboys.
Leads did not last for long, as the two-run Doughboys lead was erased the very next inning, as a triple cleared the bases, bringing in a pair of River Riders, tying the game up at three after the fourth.
Then Elizabethton took its first lead of the game, stringing together singles to go up a run in the fifth.
Johnson City wouldn't let that last, as the fifth was full of offense for the Doughboys. A pair of singles to start the inning would lead to a ]Sutter home run, his second of the season to regain the lead at 6-4. Johnson City would tack on one more, sending all nine in the lineup to the plate, going to the sixth leading 7-4.
The Doughboys would make a play to hold their lead with runners in scoring position in the seventh, but it wouldn't matter as Elizabethton's Carter Jagiela homered to tie it up at seven. The River Riders would keep the momentum, using a dropped third strike to help continue the scoring with three more runs, making it a six-run seventh for Elizabethton.
Johnson City would have to wait for yet another Elizabethton run in the eighth to rebuttal, with the same hitters leading off the eighth as the four-run fifth. The Doughboys would use a few hits, and a two-run double to work their way back to a tie game at 11 in the eighth inning, leaving the go-ahead run on third in the process.
Elizabethton stranded runners on second and third in the ninth, giving the Doughboys a chance to win the game with just one run.
A pair of walks would put the winning run on third with Sutter at the plate. Sutter then sent his second homer of the night over the wall, winning the game for the Doughboys in their first walk-off of the season.
The win sends Johnson City to 5-3 on the season, now in a tie for first place. Up next, the Doughboys will continue the homestand by welcoming Pulaski into town Thursday.
