Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Crosscutters fell at West Virginia 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a six-game road-trip. The Black Bears rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off victory. It was the second-straight come-from-behind walk-off win for West Virginia.
Left-handed Russian hurler Anton Kuznetsov entered with a perfect ERA in three previous appearances but was unable to protect the lead. Nick Patten's infield single drove in the winning run and capped a five-hit rally for the Black Bears.
Williamsport (3-13) carried a combined three-hit shutout effort into the ninth inning with starter Rafael Carvajal and relievers Jake Kinney and Luis Ramirez all pitching lights-out. Carvajal retired 12 consecutive batters after giving up a base-hit on the first batter he faced. The trio of pitchers had combined to retire 16 in a row before West Virginia (9-7) finally reach base again on a base-hit in the sixth.
The Cutters broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth with a two-run rally that included doubles from Tucker Maxwell and Kendall Simmons as well as a sac-bunt squeeze play by Corbin Williams for an RBI.
McCarthy Tatum registered his second stolen base of the season which was the 32nd this year for Pat Borders' speed-demons. The Crosscutters lead the league with 33 steals. Williamsport's pair of doubles upped its season total to 36 which is also tops in the NYPL.
The Cutters return to BB&T Ballpark on Monday night to open a six-game homestand. Left-hander Junior Tejada will take the hill to begin a week-long stretch that will feature Fireworks shows on Wednesday, July 3 and Friday, July 5.
