Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Hudson Valley Renegades snapped a four-game losing streak as they defeated the Connecticut Tigers 8-2 Sunday evening from Dodd Stadium. With the win, Hudson Valley ended its six-game road trip with a 2-4 record, bookending their four losses with two victories.
The Renegades scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead. In the first, designated hitter Greg Jones got to first on an error, went to third on a single, then scored as rightfielder Hill Alexander lofted a sacrifice fly to center. In the second, centerfielder K.V. Edwards reached on a bunt single, stole second, then came around on a lined two-out single to center from shortstop Nick Sogard to give the Renegades a 2-0 advantage.
Connecticut picked up a run in the fourth. Catcher Cooper Johnson started the inning with a single to right before moving to second on another hit. With one out, rightfielder Julio Martinez grounded a ball to third that got by Luis Arcendo for an error, which allowed Johnson to score and cut the Hudson Valley lead in half.
However, the Renegades would get that run back in the fifth. Back-to-back walks put runners at first and second with one out before first-baseman Jacson McGowan roped a single to left to score leftfielder Ben Brundage from second.
In the sixth, the Renegades put the game away by plating five runs on five walks. A single and two walks loaded the bases with two out before Tigers reliever Bairon De La Rosa walked McGowan and second-baseman Cristhian Pedroza consecutively to force in two runs. Catcher Jonathan Embry stood in next and provided the big blow with a bases-clearing double to right to make the score 8-1 Hudson Valley.
The Tigers would add a meaningless run in the ninth. Avery Tuck began the inning with a double to left, then scored on a throwing error by Sogard off the bat of designated hitter Gresuan Silverio. However, Renegades reliever Andrew Gross retired the next three batters to end the game.
Hudson Valley had 10 hits for the contest including a pair of base-knocks from Brundage, Edwards and Sogard. Brundage also scored a run, Edwards doubled and scored a run as well, while Sogard scored a run and drove in another. Connecticut collected eight hits including a 3-4 effort from Silverio who singled three times. Tuck chipped in by going 2-4 with a double and run scored in the ninth.
Getting the win for the Renegades was relief man Nathan Wiles (1-0) who tossed 3.1 shutout innings on a hit with four strikeouts. The loss went to Tigers starter Jack O'Loughlin (1-2) who allowed three runs, two earned, over seven hits and four strikeouts. Hudson Valley struck out 10 Connecticut batters for the game amongst four hurlers.
The contest was delayed at the outset for an hour due to rain.
The Renegades return home tomorrow when they open a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones. It will also be the start of a five-game in six-day homestand for Hudson Valley. The Renegades will send right-hander Daiveyon Whittle (0-0, 0.59 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Jaison Vilera (1-1, 4.22 ERA) of the Cyclones. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com, in person at the Dutchess Stadium ticket window, or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
