
Voyagers Earn Series Split at Grand Junction

Grand Junction, CO - The Voyagers used timely hitting and strong mound work to secure a four-game series split with a 7-3 win over the Rockies Saturday night at Suplizio Field. Great Falls (11-14) is now 5-10 on the road this season. The Voyagers are 6-3 in their last nine games. Grand Junction (14-13) fell to 7-8 at home.
The Rockies started the scoring with a single run in the first. Eddy Diaz led off the frame with a base-hit to center. Diaz went to second on a passed ball and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Julio Carreras.
Both teams plated runs in the second. Great Falls tied it in the top half with a one-out solo home run high and deep to left by Sam Abbott. It was Abbott's fourth big fly of the season. In the home half, Grand Junction reclaimed a 2-1 lead after Max George reached base with a single to center leading off the inning. He moved to second on a wild pitch, and a pickoff throwing error to second allowed George to reach third. A sacrifice fly to left from Yolki Pena brought George home.
The Voyagers broke even with a run in the third. Kelvin Maldonado reached base with a single lined into center. A one-out double by Harvin Mendoza deep to the wall in left-center scored Maldonado for a 2-2 tie.
Great Falls took the lead for good in the fifth. Kelvin Maldonado walked with one out. Luis Curbelo then smoked a two-run home run deep to left for his third of the season and a 4-2 advantage. The Rockies plated a run in the sixth and it was 4-3.
The Voyagers extended their lead with a three-run eighth. Luis Curbelo led off the inning with a line drive single to left. He moved to third on two wild pitches. Harvin Mendoza reached base with a walk. With one out, Luis Mieses smacked a liner into right for a 5-3 lead. With two outs, Anderson Comas brought both runners around on a triple grounded up the right field line.
On the mound, Great Falls did not allow a single earned run. Sammy Peralta posted his first win in relief. Peralta (1-0) worked three innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Mitchell Kilkenny took the loss for Grand Junction. Kilkenny (1-1) lasted four-and-a-third and allowed four earned runs on five hits (two HRs) with three strikeouts and one walk. Dan Metzdorf made a four-inning start for the Voyagers and yielded two unearned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Pauly Milto finished the game with six up and six down.
The Voyagers outhit the Rockies 9-to-7, and won the game despite committing four errors. Harvin Mendoza collected three hits with one RBI and one run. Luis Curbelo went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Eddy Diaz and Max George posted two-hit games for Grand Junction. Great Falls opens a new four game road series in Colorado Springs against the Rocky Mountain Vibes starting with game one Sunday at 4 p.m. Great Falls returns home on July 19th to face Missoula.
