Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Charlie Tilson and Luke Voit had big nights at the plate, Nick Petree turned in yet another quality start and the Palm Beach Cardinals edged the Jupiter Hammerheads 5-3 on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals (35-33) have won nine of their last 11 games and are guaranteed to finish with a winning record in the first half - the first time since 2010.
Tilson and Voit combined to go 5-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the red hot Palm Beach offense. The Cardinals are second in the league with a .290 team batting average this month.
Voit came through for the Birds in a big way, stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The first baseman drilled a shot down the left field line to drive in two runs and give the Cardinals the 5-3 lead. Gerwuins Velazco and Charlie Tilson each singled through the right side of the infield and scored in the inning.
Voit got the scoring started in the second inning, scalding a ball down the right field line for a leadoff double and later touching home when Alex Mejia grounded into a double play.
Tilson added to the early 1-0 lead in the third. He legged out a two-out, infield single, swiped second base and scored on a Ildemaro Vargas single through the right side to double the Cardinals lead to 2-0.
Palm Beach starter Nick Petree was cruising through four innings before allowing a two-run home run to Blake Barber in the fifth inning. Barber's long ball was the only blemish for Petree, who scattered six hits over six innings, walked two and struck out five.
Petree left the game with the Cardinals up 3-2 but didn't factor into the decision when the Hammerheads (27-41) tied the game in the seventh inning. Kyle Barraclough surrendered one run on three hits over two thirds of the seventh inning before Iden Nazario's number was called out of the bullpen.
Jupiter's Noah Perio drove in Ryan Goetz in the inning to even the score at 3-3 before Voit's go-ahead RBI double in the eighth put Palm Beach up for good 5-3.
Nazario and Dixon Llorens pitched 2.1 perfect innings with a combined three strikeouts to end the game and preserve the victory. Nazario (3-0) earned the win while Llorens picked up his third save of the season.
Casey McCarthy (2-3) took the loss for Jupiter after giving up two runs on three hits over 1.1 innings in relief.
The Cardinals will look to even the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers series at four games apiece on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. RH Thomas Lee (5-3, 2.84) is expected to start for Palm Beach. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Following the game, members of the Cardinals and Hammerheads will have their heads shaved on the dugouts in support of the Vs. Cancer Foundation - a cause which helps children in the battle with cancer. The team is also collecting donations for the event on Cardinals.vs-cancer.org.
