Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, FL - Luke Voit's two run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning was the difference as the Hammerheads fell to Palm Beach 5-3 on Monday. It was the fourth straight defeat for Jupiter.

With the game tied at three in the eighth inning the Cards rallied off of Jupiter right-hander Casey McCarthy. Gerwuins Velazco, who was playing in his first game with Palm Beach, started things when he singled to right. With Charlie Tilson batting the Birds would put on a hit and run play and it was executed perfectly as Tilson singled through the right side as Velazco moved to third.

After McCarthy walked Ildemaro Vargas to load the bases, Breyvic Valera hit a grounder to the shortstop Anthony Gomez who fired to the plate to cut down Velazco.

With one out and the bases still loaded, Voit would pull a 3-2 pitch from McCarthy down the left field line for a two run double to give Palm Beach a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

The Hammerheads did not lead in the game and trailed early in the second inning when Voit led off with a double and later scored on a double play ball.

Palm Beach doubled the lead off Jupiter starter Jake Esch when Tilson reached on a single, stole second and scored on an infield hit by Vargas.

In the fifth the Sharks would tie things up when Anthony Gomez hit a leadoff single and Blake Barber smashed a two-run homer to left, his second in three games. It was Barber's team-leading sixth long ball of the year.

The game would not be tied for long as the Birds regained the lead in the fifth against Brian Ellington. David Washington started the inning with a single and after Ellington struck out the next two batters, the Cardinals would pull off their first successful hit and run of the night.

With Washington on the move Tilson lofted a base hit into the gap in right center as Washington motored around to score standing up, although Tilson was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

The Hammerheads continued to be resilient tying the game with two outs in the seventh. Ryan Goetz began the rally when he hit a liner to center that was just out of the reach of a diving Tilson. The play went for a triple and Noah Perio would follow with a single up the box to tie things at three.

After Voit gave Palm Beach the lead in the eighth the Hammerheads went down in order in the ninth as Dixon Llorens picked up his third save of the season.

With the win the Cardinals now trail the Fins vs. Feathers series 4-3.

The Hammerheads and Cardinals will play the second game of the series on Vs. Cancer Foundation Night at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday. Many Jupiter and Palm Beach players will shave their heads to benefit the Vs. Cancer Foundation following the game. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.

NOTES: Miami Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia began his rehab with the Hammerheads on Monday night going 2-for-4. He caught all eight innings.
