Vipers Win Back-To-Back, Take Matinee over Warriors

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (10-6) topped the Santa Cruz Warriors (9-7) 107-103 this afternoon at State Farm Arena. RGV won its first back-to-back games with today's win over the Warriors and Saturday's 112-106 win over Bakersfield.

Houston Rockets assignee Montrezl Harrell and Will Cummings each led the Vipers with 20 points. Harrell also contributed 4 blocks. Jaron Johnson added 17 points. Rockets assignee K.J. McDaniels scored 12 points. Chris Walker scored a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds, a season-high in rebounds. Joshua Smith added 10 points.

Elliot Williams led the Warriors with 27 points. Ronnie Brewer scored 17 points, followed by Dan Nwaelele with 15 points. Darington Hobson recorded 14 points. Jarred Shaw scored a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Verdell Jones chipped in 10 points.

Smith made the first basket of the game with a hook shot to put the Vipers on the board 2-0. Williams responded with a three-pointer to set the Warriors ahead 3-2. Santa Cruz held on to the lead for the remainder of the first half. At the end of the first quarter, the Warriors led 32-24. By halftime, the Vipers cut their deficit to 58-56.

The Vipers opened the third quarter with 15-4 run to take a 71-62 lead with 7:53 on the clock. Santa Cruz fought back to take a 83-82 advantage, courtesy of a jump shot from Hobson with 1:31 remaining in the quarter. Cummings made a layup with 13 seconds remaining to put RGV on top 86-84 heading into the final period. The Vipers are 7-0 this season when leading at the conclusion of the third quarter.

The score tied twice and the lead changed twice during the fourth quarter as each team battled for the win. A shot from behind the arc by Nwaelele tied the game at 103 points with 12 seconds remaining in the game. Fouls sent Cummings and McDaniels to the free throw line, where they each made two shots to give the Vipers the 107-103 win.
