Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers should have been jetlagged and exhausted after playing their fourth game in five nights in three different states but after a 40-point fourth quarter, the Vipers definitely had enough energy to earn their third consecutive home win. The Vipers, all sporting white headbands as a sign of team unity, swept the season series over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants with a 131-116 victory win Tuesday night at Dodge Arena.
The Vipers began the game on a 25-8 run, which was capped off by A Desmon Farmer three-pointer from the left wing. The Vipers held a double digit lead for the majority of the first half but an Earl Calloway lay-up with time expiring gave the Mad Ants hope as they trailed at the break by only eight points.
The Vipers came out strong again in the second half, outscoring Fort Wayne 38-25 in the third quarter to take a 21-point lead into the final frame. The lead would jump out to as many as 30 points in the final period as Fort Wayne never closed to within 15 for the remainder of the game.
Farmer tied his season high with 39-points to lead all scorers. Jesse Smith and Trent Strickland each finished with double-doubles for Rio Grande Valley. Smith scored 25 and brought down 11 boards, Strickland scored 21 and hauled in a season high 16 rebounds. Ron Howard tallied 33 to lead five Mad Ants in double-figures in the loss. Fort Wayne won two in a row before Tuesday's loss.
The Vipers will sit for 12 days before their next game on March 9th at Dodge Arena versus the Colorado 14ers. Tip-off for the Sunday night game against Colorado is set for 5:05
