Calgary Vipers News Release
A near perfect pitching performance and some offensive fireworks put an end to the Calgary Vipers four-game losing streak as they walked away with a 4-0 victory over the Joliet JackHammers on Friday night.
Evan Greusel (3-0) pitched a complete game, two-hitter for the Vipers as they picked up their first win of the ten game road trip. Greusel struck out four and faced just 29 batters in the game, two more than the minimum, to earn the win.
Carlos Duncan provided the spark for the Vipers as he drilled a three-run homerun in the eighth inning to lead the offensive charge.
Kevin Cheppenko (2-4) wound up taking the loss for Joliet despite a very strong outing. Cheppenko allowed just one hit and one unearned run in seven innings of work.
The first run of the game didn't come until the top of the fourth inning. Aaron McEachran drew a walk to get on base, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved up to third on a wild pitch before Brandon Rogers drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give Calgary a 1-0 lead.
McEachran reached base all four times he came to the plate in the game although he didn't pick up a hit. The Calgary first baseman walked three times in the game and was also hit by a pitch.
The game was held scoreless over the next three innings before Duncan went deep with his fifth homerun of the year in the eighth inning.
Manabu Kuramochi got things started in the top of the eighth by driving a single to left field. The speedy second baseman then stole both second and third base before McEachran was hit, setting the table for Duncan.
The Vipers 2005 MVP delivered with a three-run bomb to left field off JackHammers reliever Derell McCall that put Calgary up by four.
That was more than enough for Greusel, who cruised through the Joliet line up. After surrendering a hit to the first batter he faced, Greusel went on to retire the next 19 hitters in a row before allowing a second hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Calgary (18-28) will try to duplicate their performance on Saturday night when they will square off with the JackHammers for the second game of the series. Brett White (0-1) is expected to get his second start of the season for the Vipers.
