T-Bones Outlast Schaumburg for 12-8 Win

KANSAS CITY - The T-Bones (22-24) jumped out to an early lead, then held off a late rally by the Schaumburg Flyers (29-17) for a 12-8 win Friday night in front of 6,090 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The Flyers struck first as a single to left field by Ben Van Iderstine allowed Rob Watson to score, but Kansas City had an answer named Greg Jacobs. The reigning Rawlings Northern League Player of the Month for June sent a 1-0 pitch from Schaumburg's Raymond Jenkins to the right field berm, tying the game at one run a piece.
Jacobs was the spark that fueled an offensive outburst by the T-Bones in the third inning. Jacobs scored as a sharp line drive by Kyle Nichols just missed a diving Schaumburg third baseman. The Flyers gave Kansas City two gift runs on an error and a walk with the bases loaded and the T-Bones bats did the rest. J.D. Foust tallied his first hit as a T-Bone on a single to right field that allowed Craig Hurba and Doug Dreher to score. Brandon Jones then broke his hitting slump with a three-run home run that cleared the bases to cap an eight-run inning and gave the T-Bones a 9-1 lead.
The T-Bones weren't finished either. Nichols notched the second-straight hit of his Kansas City debut in the fourth inning and allowed Peterson to score from second, pushing the T-Bones lead to 10-1.
Schaumburg answered in a big way in the fifth inning. After the Flyers loaded the bases, Chris Weekly cleared them with a grand slam to center field. The next batter, Eric Cole, added a long ball of his own quickly narrowing the T-Bones lead to 10-6. The Flyers continued to chip away at the T-Bones lead, adding another run in the sixth when Gord scored on an RBI single by Geoff McCallum. The guests scored once more in the seventh inning when Josue Lopez hit into a double play, but allowed Weekly to score, and narrowing the gap even more at 10-8, but that was all the Flyers could muster.
J.D. Foust's first home run in the T-Bones pinstripes, a two-run shot, proved to be the nail in the Schaumburg coffin. Foust and Chad Sosebee scored on the play, giving the T-Bones the 12-8 lead they held for the rest of the game.
T-Bones newcomer Hank Woodman pitched four solid innings before allowing five runs in the fifth inning. Woodman allowed six hits and six runs, all earned, while striking out seven and walking three in his Kansas City debut. Of those six hits, four came in the five-run fifth inning. James Morrison gave the T-Bones three innings of relief pitching before giving way to Caleb Balbuena, who finished the game.
The same two teams will be back at it once again Saturday night. Blake Williams (4-0, 0.82) will toe the rubber for the Flyers while the T-Bones will counter with reigning Rawlings Pitcher of the Month Jonathan Krysa (7-2, 3.10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
