July 7, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Joe Mathis passed Chris Powell for the most triples in Northern League history as Brandon Culp and the RedHawks bullpen combined to allow just two earned runs as the West Division first half champions returned to Newman Outdoor Field to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-3 in front of Fargo-Moorhead's largest home crowd of the season.
In front of 4,831 the RedHawks fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first as Winnipeg's Fehlandt Lentini led off the game with a double and then scored with one out when Will Smith singled to left field.
Fargo-Moorhead pulled even with Winnipeg in the bottom half of the inning in similar fashion. Joe Mathis led off the bottom of the first with a double and then scored with one out on a Richard Austin singled. The RedHawks began extending their lead in the bottom half of the second inning scoring four runs on three hits. Ruben Salazar led off with a singled and advanced to second when Joshua Beshears walked Allen Mottram. Both Salazar and Mottram moved up a bag on a sacrifice bunt by Kory Wayment that almost landed him on first base.
After Craig Ringe drove in Salazar, Mathis, with runners on first and third, hit his 26th Northern League triple to move ahead of Chris Powell for the most triples in league history. Mathis scored on a balk by Beshears for the final run of the inning.
Winnipeg started to rally in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on three hits, but still trailed the RedHawks at innings end. The Goldeyes strung together three consecutive hits with one out when Ryan Hamilton, Lentini and Sam Walsh singled, doubled and singled, respectively.
In the bottom of the eighth inning the RedHawks posted their second four-run inning of the game as they took a game-winning 10-3 lead.
Brandon Culp earned his second consecutive win and the first of his career against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Culp went 7.1 innings and although he surrendered 11 hits he allowed just three runs, two earned and tied a season-high with six strikeouts. Beshears was credited with the loss and Brandon Harmsen picked up his first save of the season.
The RedHawks and Goldeyes will face off in game two as the RedHawks try to pull the season series even. Fargo-Moorhead will send Mark Michael (6-1, 3.29) to the mound as he looks to tie Kansas City's Jonathon Krysa with seven wins. Winnipeg will counter with Tony Evans (1-0, 5.84). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
