Northern League Recaps

July 7, 2006 - Northern League (NL) News Release

GARY - The Winnipeg Goldeyes sidestepped another late-inning comeback by the Gary SouthShore RailCats, ending a four-game losing streak with a 4-3, 10-inning victory at U. S. Steel Yard.

Gary rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Taylor's pinch-hit, two-run double off Josh Kite (1-1) tied the score at 3-3. Taylor froze on Steve Haake's line-drive single to center, and only advanced to third on the hit. Kite recovered to strike out Jermaine Allensworth and Tanner Townsend and send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Jimmy Hurst doubled, advanced to third on a bunt single by Harry Berrios, and scored on David Gates sacrifice fly. Joe Brown pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth for Winnipeg to earn his first save.

The loss snapped Gary's five-game winning streak.

JOLIET - David Manning threw six solid innings and received a five-run outburst in support, as the Joliet JackHammers defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 5-3 at Silver Cross Field.

Manning (1-1) yielded one run on three hits while striking out five over the first six innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, the JackHammers exploded for five runs against Kansas City starter Buddy Blair (1-7). RBI-doubles by Will Henderson and Bryan Vickers keyed the five-run inning, which was helped along by a T-Bones error that led to two unearned runs.

Kansas City closed to within 5-3 when Eddie Pearson hit his Northern League-leaing 12th home run in the top of the ninth inning off Joliet reliever Eric Fussell. Amad Stephens relived Fussell and retired the final three Kansas City batters in order to record his eighth save.

SCHAUMBURG - Matt Bailie pitched six solid innings and Geoff McCallum and Eric Cole each had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Schaumburg Flyers to a 5-1 win over the Calgary Vipers at Alexian Field, the Flyers sixth straight victory.

Bailie (1-1) yielded only one unearned run on five hits while striking out seven to earn his first win of the season.

McCallum ignited the Flyers' two-run rally in the first with a leadoff walk, advanced to third on Chris Weekly's single, and scored on Cole's sacrifice fly. Ben Van Iderstine drove in Weekly with an RBI-double to put Schaumburg ahead 2-0.

The Flyers added a run in the second inning and two more in the fifth, keyed by McCallum's RBI-double and Cole's RBI-single.
