Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), followed the Elmira Jackals back to their home in New York after a 3-2 shootout win on Wednesday to win again outside of regulation by a final score of 6-5 on Friday.
The Vipers jumped on the board early, as Mark Scott netted a shot off passes from David Beauregard and Alex Jerofejevs at 11:15 of the first period. Elmira would put one on the board to tie the game at the 14:22 mark before Vipers defenseman Rico Fatticci would give Roanoke the lead once again just over two minutes later, scoring his first goal of the season with assists from Josh Tataryn and Petr Jelinek.
Beauregard would inflate the Vipers' lead to two goals four minutes and 20 seconds into the second period, as he scored off passes from Jan Jas and rookie L.P. Martin, who has led the Vipers in scoring over the past five games. The Jackals would answer with three consecutive goals scored within a three minute span at 5:11, 6:43, and 8:08 of the period, giving themselves a one-goal advantage over the Vipers.
Roanoke was not finished yet, however, as Beauregard scored his second goal of the period at the 11:31 mark to knot the game again at four apiece. Jackal Kevin Cooper got the last word in the period, scoring with a minute and five seconds remaining on the clock to put Elmira on top for a second time.
It would be the rookie Martin who would save the Vipers, giving them the chance to win it by tying the game with a goal at the 8:30 mark of the third period off assists from veteran D-man Travis Smith and rookie winger Dave Shillington. For the second time in just three days, the Vipers found themselves headed to a shootout with their division rival Jackals.
Vipers Head Coach Jim Wiley sent Martin out to the ice first in round one of the shootout, as the hot young forward would beat Jackals netminder Nick Boucher to give the Vipers the lead. Jarrett Konkle would score in the Jackals half of the round to blank the scoreboard yet again. The fourth Elmira shooter, Craig MacDonald, gave the Jackals the lead, leaving it to Vipers scoring pro Josh Tataryn to salvage Roanoke's chances. Tataryn fired a shot past Boucher to keep the shootout alive. Eddie Lowe would be next for the Jackals, and the crowd of 3,362 fell silent when Jamie Hodson made the save. Rookie Steve Crusco would be the Vipers' first second-round sudden death shooter, as he netted a shot past Boucher to put the Vipers on top again. Trevor Burgess would be next for Elmira, but he could not pull it off, as Hodson made another dazzling save in front of the Vipers' net to give Roanoke its second consecutive shootout win over the Jackals.
The Vipers improve to 7-6-1 with 15 points in the United Hockey League's Eastern Division, maintaining their position in second place.
