Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- In a showdown of two of the top teams in the United Hockey League, the Rockford IceHogs (13-3-2) dropped a 4-3 contest to the Kalamazoo Wings (12-2-0) at the Rockford MetroCentre Friday night in front of 4,954 fans. Wings center Kory Karlander netted a pair of goals, including the game clincher into an empty net with 9 seconds remaining in regulation, to lead Kalamazoo to their eighth straight win.
Rockford found themselves down 3-0 29 seconds into the second period. Kalamazoo grabbed the 1-0 advantage when winger Joe Seroski slammed in his 12th goal of the campaign at 11:37 of the first frame. Winger Tyler Willis extended the lead to 2-0 at 14:31 of the opening period when he tipped in his third goal of the season past Hogs goalie Michel Robinson.
The Wings opened the second period on a power play and Karlander capitalized 29 seconds into the frame. The Hogs tightened things up and began a comeback that would eventually fall short. Winger Billy Tibbetts remained hot for Rockford when he blew a shot past Wings goaltender Joel Martin at 8:00.
Later in the second period Tibbetts set up fellow winger Greg Barber for his ninth goal of the season at 15:04. But that's all Rockford could manage on Martin and the Wings. Martin made several key saves down the stretch to keep the IceHogs off of the board the rest of the way.
Robinson was given the loss after stopping 31 Kalamazoo shots, while Martin earned the win with 29 saves. The Hogs were 1-for-6 on the power play, but held the Wings to 1-for-7.
