Vipers Drop Two In A Row To Richmond

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers dropped two games to the Richmond RiverDogs this past weekend, losing 4-2 at the Richmond Coliseum on Friday, January 13th and 3-1 at the Roanoke Civic Center on Saturday, January 14th. The Vipers have fallen to 5th place in the United Hockey League Eastern Division at 12-19-4, and will look to regain some ground in the division this week as they host the Trashers and the Richmond RiverDogs for three games.

Friday, January 13th at Richmond

Richmond RiverDogs 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2

L.P. Martin got the Vipers on the board first in Richmond Friday night, just a minute and 36 seconds into the first period. Dan Vandermeer would tie the game for the RiverDogs before the period's end however, scoring at the 19:12 mark of the period. Mike Wiggins gave Roanoke Valley the advantage again at 8:58 of the second, but the lead was taken away yet again by Mike Oliveira who scored less than three minutes later at 11:33. The Vipers were silenced by Mike D'Alessandro in the third period, and Richmond managed two more on Shawn Conschafter, winning by a final score of 4-2 at the Richmond Coliseum.

Saturday, January 14th vs. Richmond

Richmond RiverDogs 3, Roanoke Valley Vipers 1

The RiverDogs opened up scoring Saturday night at the Roanoke Civic Center with a goal from John DiPace at 8:32 of the first period. The Vipers tied the game at 19:42 of the second with a goal from Mike Wiggins, who extended his point-scoring streak to three games with the goal. David Beauregard and Matt Miller were given assists on the goal. The RiverDogs took the lead at 7:30 of the third with a Mike Oliveira goal. The Vipers continued to battle, as they made 44 shots on Mike D'Alessandro, but Warren Cooper sealed the win for the ‘Dogs with an empty-net goal at 19:34 of the third.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers will host the Danbury Trashers on Wednesday, January 18th at 7:05p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center. Danbury leads the season series between the two teams 5-3. The RiverDogs will be back in town for two on Friday and Saturday, January 20th and 21st, with both games starting at 7:35p.m. The RiverDogs have won the last two meetings, and now lead the season series 4-2.

VIPER BITES

-Vipers goaltender Shawn Conschafter was nominated for the Southern Sports Supply UHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending 1/15/06. Shawn made 31 saves on Friday, January 13th, and 25 saves on Saturday, January 14th versus the RiverDogs. Despite playing well, Conschafter was charged with a loss both nights.

-Left wing Mike Wiggins received the team's nomination for the Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week for the week ending 1/15/06. Wiggins scored two points (2G) over the weekend against Richmond, extending his point-streak to three games.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Shawn Conschafter and Rico Fatticci will visit Catawba Hospital on Tuesday, January 17th at 1:45p.m. to give a presentation and do a question and answer session with the hospital's patients. Several patients will also visit the Vipers game against Richmond on Friday, January 20th.

Nathan Riddell and L.P. Martin will help coach the Valley Youth Hockey Association's "Learn to Play Ice Hockey" program at the Ice Station on Tuesday night, January 17th from 5:30-6:30p.m. Call the Ice Station at (540) 265-1505 for more information on the program or to sign your child up to participate.

Gray Shaneberger, Nathan Riddell, and Steve Crusco will visit Mason's Cove Elementary school on Thursday, January 19th at 12:45p.m. to speak to the students who met their monthly reading goals.

David Beauregard and Mike Wiggins will visit Crystal Spring Elementary on Thursday, January 19th at 2:15p.m. to speak to the 4th graders about the importance of staying in school, doing your homework, and getting good grades.

Don't forget the Vipers ongoing Coat and Blanket Drive sponsored by Grand Home Furnishings. All season long you can bring a new or gently used coat or blanket out to the Vipers game to be placed in one of the drop boxes, which are located throughout the arena and concourse areas. All donations will go directly to the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Join the Vipers for Martinsville Speedway Night on Saturday, January 21st as they host the Richmond RiverDogs for a 7:35p.m. matchup. Martinsville Speedway will have several drivers on hand to sign autographs, and the Vipers will be wearing special racing-themed jerseys to be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to the Valley Youth Hockey Association and the Roanoke Rescue Mission.
