
Vipers defeat Big Horn Sheep

The Calgary Vipers exploded for 12 runs in their first two at-bats in defeating the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep 16-2 at Cerro Colorado Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico. Offensively the team was led by Luis Taveras who hit a grand slam and knocked in five runs in total. With the victory the Vipers improve to 16-7 on the Golden Baseball League season and remain two and a half games back of the Chico Outlaws in the North Division.
On the mound Scott Watson made his season debut and threw three and two third innings while not allowing a run and striking out four. Brant Stickel tossed two scoreless inning to finish off the game.
Calgary quickly jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Guillermo Reyes singled, Kevin Price was hit by pitch, Julio Ramirez walked to load the bases, and Luis Taveras hit a grand slam for his fifth home run of the season. Brent Metheny quickly followed with back-to-back homers for his second in as many nights for a 5-0 lead.
Tijuana got a couple runs back in the bottom of the frame when Masjid Kharry and Hebert Lara walked, Eric Scriven singled to load the bases, David Ochoa walked for a run batted in, and Carlos Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 score.
The Vipers continued the romp in the second as Reyes and Jonny Kaplan walked, Ramirez singled in a run, Drew Miller doubled in two, Taveras reached on an error which scored Miller, Metheny walked, the pitcher Anastacio Martinez drove in a run with a base hit for his first single and RBI of the season, Reyes singled to load the bases, and Kaplan and Price both walked for RBI and a seven run inning for a 12-2 advantage.
In the top of the fourth frame Calgary added two runs when Price reached on a dropped third strike, Ramirez singled, Miller walked to load the bases, and both Taveras and Jorge Mejia walked for RBI and a 14-2 lead.
Another run was scored in the sixth inning as Miller doubled, Taveras singled, and Mejia plated a run with a base knock for a 15-2 advantage.
The Snakes made the score 16-2 in the seventh as Reyes tripled and scored on a Price sacrifice fly.
The Vipers continue their season long road trip which will see the team play ten games in the 11 days in Tijuana, Mexico taking on the Big Horn Sheep with a double-header on Saturday June 19th starting at 3:00 PM MDT. The trip wraps up in Victoria against the Seals on Monday June 21st, Tuesday June 22nd, Wednesday June 23rd, and Thursday June 24th all at 8:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday June 25th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals. On Saturday June 26th the two teams will play a double-header starting at 1:35 PM MDT and it will be Kid's Day at the ballpark where the Inflatamaniacs will perform along with Clowns and Magicians.
On Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host the Edmonton Capitals for a two-game series. After the game on the 30th the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular.
