Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Returning home for the start of a seven-game homestand at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals squared off against the Edmonton Capitals in game one of a three game series on Friday night. Sending Jason Kershner (2-2) to the mound for the start, the Seals matched up against Evan White (0-2) on the hill for the Capitals.
Kicking down the door in the bottom of the first inning, a lead-off base hit from Dale Swinford followed by a fielder's choice to Colin Moro set up a three-run home run in Mike Mooney's first at-bat as a member of the Seals.
Extending their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third, a two-run blast off the bat of Terrence McClain along with an RBI double from Josh Arhart gave Victoria a commanding lead on home turf. The Seals would add on another pair of runs in the fourth frame, when McClain drove in another with a base hit and Arhart drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 8-0 Victoria.
With Kershner dominant on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning of play, the tide and the course of the game turned in the top half of that frame. With two runners on Pete Farina notched the Capitals first hit and first run of the contest with an RBI single. Then reliever Mike Hrynio helped his own cause with a three-run home run before Cliff Brumbaugh's first hit of the game pulled Edmonton within three, an 8-5 score.
Responding with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the seventh, the Seals received back-to-back solo shots from Brian Rios and Arhart en route to a three-run frame and an 11-5 advantage. Not to be outdone, however, the Capitals used two hits and a pair of Victoria errors to score four runs in the top of the eighth inning and force the deficit to just two.
Finding more breathing room in the bottom of the eighth, an RBI base hit from Colin Moro handed the Seals the final dagger with a 12-9 lead. Turning back to closer Brandon Villafuerte in the top of the ninth, Victoria claimed just its second win in the month of June by taking a wild series opener over Edmonton, a 12-9 final score.
Jason Kershner improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory, while Evan White took his third loss on the season for the Capitals. Mike Mooney's 3-for-4, three RBI debut was the story for the Seals along with four combined home runs and a 4-for-4 night from Josh Arhart, while Mike Hrynio finished with two innings pitched and a pair of hits to go with four batted in all in a losing effort for the visitors.
