Calgary Vipers News Release
Erasing a five run deficit the Calgary Vipers tied the game late but could not find the lead and lost 7-6 to the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. After taking an early 1-0 lead the Snakes allowed three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to fall behind 6-1. Chipping away Calgary got a run in the sixth and tied the game with four tallies in the eighth but it would be Edmonton who scored in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.
"I'm very proud of the way we fought back and very happy with the effort especially with some guys out," said Manager Morgan Burkhart.
Out of the bullpen British Columbia's Shawn Hetherington threw an impressive two scoreless innings with three strikeouts while J.J. Whetsel tossed a scoreless frame. Chris Bodishbaugh (0-1) recorded the loss by allowing a run in an inning and one third. Bartolome Fortunato (2-0) took the win with two scoreless innings.
At the plate Jonny Kaplan and Bryan Burke sparked the Snakes each with two hits and two runs scored while Justin Tellam had two hits along with two runs batted in.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Bryan Burke doubled and with two outs Jimmy Rohan singled for a run batted in and a 1-0 advantage.
Edmonton responded in the third frame when Mike Hrynio, Todd Linden, and Matt Rogelstad all singled to load the bases, Brent Metheny singled home two runs, and Lou Santangelo collected a RBI base hit for a 3-1 lead.
The Capitals scored another three runs an inning later as Pete Tountas singled, Linden doubled, Rogelstad singled in two, and Enrique Cruz doubled home one for a 6-1 advantage.
The Vipers got a run closer at 6-2 in the sixth when Jonny Kaplan singled, Burke bunted him over, Kaplan stole third base, and Wilver Perez drove him in with a base hit.
Calgary tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth inning as Kaplan doubled, Burke singled in a run, Perez singled, Rohan walked to load the bases, Drew Miller drove in one with a base hit, and Justin Tellam plated two with a single for a four run frame.
In the bottom of the ninth Edmonton walked off with the win when Metheny and Santangelo singled, Metheny advanced to third base when Kaplan robbed Cody Nowlin in center field with a diving catch, and Tountas collected a RBI with a fielder's choice for the 7-6 final.
