Walk-Off Win Wraps Up Series Versus Vipers

Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals closed out their opening homestand with a thrilling walk-off victory on Sunday afternoon at TELUS Field, as they edged the Calgary Vipers 7-6, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Caps built a commanding 6-1 lead on their provincial rivals after the fourth inning, but the Vipers chipped away and put four runs on the board in the eighth to tie it up at 6-6. The home side came through in the clutch in the bottom of the ninth, though, as second baseman Pete Tountas drove in first baseman Brent Metheny for the game-winning run.

Metheny, who played for the Vipers last season, was the Caps' offensive star on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Matt Rogelstad also had a big game, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while centre fielder Todd Linden, catcher Lou Santangelo and starting pitcher Mike Hrynio each chipped in with a pair of hits.

Hrynio tossed five innings and surrendered just one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts, while Bartolome Fortunato, the team's closer, earned his second victory of the season, striking out four Vipers over the final two innings. The Caps have won six of their first eight games to start the North American League season, all against the Vipers.

"It's nice putting up so many wins against my old team," Metheny said. "We're off to a great start to the season and feeling really good. I've been playing ball since I was seven and I've only won one championship when I was 10. But it seems like Edmonton is the place to play to get a ring this year. I'm excited."

The Caps have played their first eight games of the season against the provincial rival Vipers and they're not quite done yet, as the teams head back to Calgary for three more contests Monday through Wednesday at Foothills Stadium. All three games start at 6:30 p.m., and Monday's tilt is a makeup game from a rain-out on Friday, May 27.

The next home series runs Thursday through Monday at TELUS Field against the North Division rival Lake County Fielders, who are owned by Kevin Costner. The first game of the series is another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
