Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals announced today they have released four players from their roster and added three, including two pitchers - one with MLB experience - and an infielder.

The Caps have released pitchers Justin Mace (Tulsa, OK), Scott Kelly (Belleville, ON) and Steve Green (Montreal, QC), as well as third baseman Willy Aybar (Bani, Dominican Republic).

Taking their spots on Edmonton's roster are pitchers Brandon Villafuerte (Hilo, HI) and Tom Boleska (Montreal, QC), as well as infielder Carlos Duncan (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic).

Villafuerte is a 35-year-old veteran right-handed hurler with 91 games of MLB experience with the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound pitcher earned one career MLB win, three saves and had a 4.12 ERA with 77 strikeouts.

The 24-year-old Canadian pitcher Boleska has affiliated experience with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as high as the Double-A level. The 33-year-old Duncan played with the Capitals two seasons ago and hit 13 home runs with 38 RBI and a .291 batting average. He has also played as high as Double-A with the Anaheim Angels organization.

Aybar, a former MLB infielder with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays, was slated to play third base for the Caps this season, but he was officially released this weekend after he was unable to complete the necessary documentation required to enter Canada, in a timely manner.

The Caps completed a home series victory over the provincial rival Calgary Vipers on Sunday, winning 7-6 to take four of the six games in the homestand and start the season with a solid 6-2 record. They play games in Calgary on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before opening a new home series on Thursday against the Lake County Fielders, owned by Kevin Costner.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
