Shortell Silences Snakes

Calgary Vipers News Release

Managing only four hits and committing one costly error the Calgary Vipers (3-6) were defeated 7-3 by the Edmonton Capitals (5-2) at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Rory Shortell (1-0) got the start for the Capitals and was terrific in tossing eight innings while allowing only three hits and one earned run. The right hander also struck out seven batters while not walking anyone and threw only 87 pitches. One costly error also hurt the Snakes as a dropped fly ball in the third inning led to four Edmonton unearned runs. Dusty Gober (0-1) took the loss after giving up ten hits and two earned runs in four and a third innings.

"Offensively we were pathetic, we have guys who in the past have hit and for whatever reason are not hitting right now," commented Manager Morgan Burkhart.

Out of the bullpen Saskatoon's Dan Morari was solid in getting out of a jam in the fifth inning while throwing an inning and two thirds and allowing one hit. Rob Naegele was also sharp in tossing a three-up, three-down four pitch eighth frame.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Tom Collaro hit a solo home run for a 1-0 advantage.

In the next half inning Calgary's Kevin Price matched that solo blast with one of his own for his first home run of the season and a 1-1 tie.

The Capitals scored four unearned runs in the third inning after Cody Nowlin reached on a dropped fly ball by second baseman Price to leadoff. After a sacrifice bunt Nowlin scored on a Todd Linden run batted in single, with two outs Enrique Cruz hit a two-run shot while Collaro and Alex Chavez both doubled for a 5-1 lead.

The Vipers got a run back in the fourth as Bryan Burke reached with a bunt single, Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielding error, Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, and Brian Rios collected a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 score.

Three consecutive singles from Edmonton's Matt Rogelstad, Cruz, and Collaro added a run in the fifth frame for a 6-2 advantage.

Another run was added in the seventh by the Capitals when Rogelstad singled and with two outs Brent Metheny doubled for a 7-2 lead.

Calgary plated a run in the ninth inning as Rohan was hit by a pitch, Miller and Price walked to load the bases followed by a Jeff Giacomini RBI single for a 7-3 final.
