Vipers Can't Overcome Big Third Quarter by Legends

FRISCO, TEXAS - The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers held the Texas Legends to 39 points in the first half, but the Legends scored another 39 points in the third quarter to come from behind to beat the Vipers 111-103 Friday at Dr. Pepper Arena.

The Vipers are losers of three-straight for the first time since April 2009. The Legends are winners of four-straight.

The Vipers (1-3) jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game as Patrick Sullivan scored eight points. The Legends (4-1) responded with an 8-1 run to pull within 12-9. The Legends took their first lead of the game at 16-15 on a three-pointer by Justin Dentmon with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter.

The Legends took a 28-22 lead on a layup by Matt Rogers, but the Vipers outscored the Legends 26-11 over the final 8:03 of the second quarter to take a 48-39 lead.

The Vipers jumped out to a 14-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Legends came back to tie the game at 67-67 on a Booker Woodfox three-pointer and take a 70-67 lead on a Dentmon layup and free throw with 2:56 remaining. The Vipers never led again.

Houston Rockets-assignee Patrick Patterson led the Vipers with 22 points and nine rebounds while Sullivan finished with 19 points, on 9-of-10 shooting, and nine rebounds. Mustafa Shakur finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Legends were led by Antonio Daniels, who scored 22 points with nine assists, and Dentmon, who scored 21 points with eight rebounds. Sean Williams recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vipers return to action on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Tulsa Convention Center when they face the Tulsa 66ers.
