Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), dropped their fourth straight Friday night, but performed exceptionally, surrendering the lead on a Mike Oliveira goal at 12:52 of the third period, which by a stroke of luck slid through the legs of Trevor Cunning. Oliveira's goal made the score 4-3, where it would stay until the time on the clock ran down and the final buzzer sounded, disappointing a loud and lively crowd at the Roanoke Civic Center.
Mike Wiggins got the Vipers on the board first, scoring at 3:30 of the first period off assists from Travis Smith and Petr Jelinek. Bobby Kukulka evened the score for the RiverDogs in the bottom half of the period, beating Trevor Cunning at the 17:29 mark in the netminder's first start as a Viper. Oliveira would give the RiverDogs a 2-1 lead four minutes and 59 seconds into the second period, and Joey Bastien would improve Richmond's advantage to two goals at the 40 second mark of the third.
Roanoke Valley rallied as Matt Miller scored at 7:33 of the period off passes from Erick Lajoie and L.P. Martin. Wiggins scored his second of the game to even the score at 11:06 as the crowd at the Roanoke Civic Center came alive. Oliveira's goal would come just a minute and 46 seconds later, and the Vipers were unable to recover.
The Vipers will look to avenge their loss to the RiverDogs tomorrow night back at the Roanoke Civic Center at 7:35p.m. Saturday is Martinsville Speedway Night with the Vipers - come check out the Vipers in their special racing-themed jerseys, and stay after the game for a live jersey auction.
