Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Powered by three power-play goals the Rockford IceHogs topped the Port Huron Flags 5-1 at the Rockford MetroCentre in front of 3,308 fans. The Hogs peppered Flags goalie Jeremy Symington with 53 shots on goal, one shy of the club-record, and fended off a club-record 15 Port Huron power-plays (holding them to 0-for-15) in the win.
Rockford grabbed the 2-0 lead midway through the first period to set the tone. IceHogs center Preston Mizzi blasted home his team leading 18th goal of the season on the 5-on-3 advantage at 8:42. Later in the first period, rookie winger Chaz Johnson knocked in his first of two-goals on the night at 10:56.
The Flags cut the lead in half at 12:33 of the opening period on a delayed penalty call. Center Aaron Brand beat Hogs goalie Ronnie Vogel five-hole to make it 2-1. Rockford got it back, however, at 18:57 when rookie defenseman Joe Markusen fired home his first marker of the season, making the contest 3-1 at the intermission.
In the second period, Rockford padded their lead with two more goals on the power-play. Winger Greg Barber hammered home another 5-on-3 Rockford goal at 2:05. Johnson then finished the scoring at 12:44, knocking in his 11th goal of the season.
The Hogs finished the contest 3-for-11 on the power-play and Vogel picked up the win making 23 saves. Markusen earned his first multi-point game as a pro with a goal and an assist. Rockford also tied a club-record by extending their home unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1).
