Vipers Add Four

Calgary Vipers News Release


The Calgary Vipers Professional Baseball club have added four players as they approach the end of the 2011 North American League season. With 9 days left in the regular season and 10 games remaining the league rosters have expanded from 23 to 25 players and are now frozen. Playoffs will start on Tuesday August 30th with the Vipers taking on the Edmonton Capitals and home field advantage yet to be decided.

Calgary welcomes back ace pitcher Manny Ayala who has missed the last two months due to injury. The 26-year-old won his first three starts of the season after compiling a 14-0 record last summer.

Joining Ayala on the pitching staff will be 15 year veteran Matt Hammons. The right-hander did not pitch last summer but has compiled 131 games at the AAA level in Mexico since 2007. The 34-year-old is a former 11th round pick of the Chicago Cubs and spent seven years in their organization. After converting to a reliever in 2002 the Peoria, Arizona resident has complied 138 saves.

Position player wise the Vipers have added catcher Al Quintana from the Chico Outlaws of the North American League. The 28-year-old is in his first season in Independent baseball after six seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization where he climb the ranks all the way to AAA.

Finally Calgary signed outfielder Derek Perren who hit .364 with the Lake County Fielders before being granted free agency. Out of the University of Southern California the 25-year-old is in his third professional season after two years with the Orange County Flyers.

The Vipers take on Jose Canseco and the Scorpions on Saturday August 20th at 5:05 PM for Serve and Protect Day along with Baseball Bonanza while before the game Heartland will take on Hell on Wheels in a Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Slave Lake. On Sunday August 21st the series will wrap up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.
