Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
SAN ANGELO - Tied at 9 in the top of the tenth inning, Eric Gonzalez hit home the winning run, allowing Edgar Trejo to score from third base as the WhiteWings won 10-9 over the San Angelo Colts Saturday night at Foster Field.
It was the third straight game that went into extra innings. The WhiteWings have now played 38 innings in their past three games.
Tied at 6 in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and two runners on base, Leivi Ventura smacked his team-leading 18th homerun over the left-centerfield wall to give the WhiteWings a 9-6 lead.
The WhiteWings called on reliever Edgar Martinez to close the game out, but instead, the Colts rallied in the bottom of the ninth to score three runs and tie the game at 9 as they sent the game into extra innings.
Eric Gonzalez, however, came through for the WhiteWings and Edgar Martinez came out with the lead for the second time, this time successfully shutting down the Colts as he struck out the side, picking up his second win of the year.
Gabriel Ortiz started the high-scoring affair by knocking a grand-slam homerun over the left field wall to put the WhiteWings on top 4-0. It was the first grand slam of the year for the WhiteWings and just the third homerun for Ortiz.
The Colts responded with three unanswered runs over the next three innings, but the WhiteWings then hit a pair of solo homeruns to give themselves a more comfortable 6-3 lead. Wilmer Pino hit his 13th homerun in the fifth inning followed by Edgar Trejo's 10th homerun in the sixth inning.
Yet the WhiteWings lost their three-run cushion the next half-inning as the Colts tied the score in the bottom of the sixth, putting three runs on the scoreboard. CJ Beatty lead off the inning by drawing a walk and the Colts followed with three consecutive singles, allowing two runs to score. The Colts tied the score one batter later when Landon Camp hit a sac fly to bring home the sixth and tying run.
RHP Eddie Dennis Jr. (3-1, 7.06 ERA) is expected to take the mound Sunday night for the WhiteWings against RHP Alfredo Caballero (0-1, 14.54 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
