Led by their starting pitcher the Calgary Vipers (50-27) defeated the Yuma Scorpions (32-49) 10-1 before 2712 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Making his first start of the season Mike Burns (7-1) tossed six scoreless innings without giving up a walk while facing 22 batters and throwing 19 first pitch strikes. In total the former big leaguer tossed 64 pitches with 45 of them being strikes. At the plate Drew Miller and Louie Templeton both scored three runs while Jonny Kaplan knocked three in. With the win the Vipers improve their lead atop the North Division to a game and a half.
Out of the bullpen Henry Mabee (1) recorded the save by tossing the final three innings while giving up one run.
Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the second inning when C.J. Ziegler lined his 22nd home run of the season, Al Quintana singled, Drew Miller followed by Louie Templeton walked to load the bases, and with two outs Jonny Kaplan cleared the bases with a three-run double for a 4-0 advantage.
In the fourth frame Drew Miller led off for the Vipers with his 12th home run of the season, Louie Templeton followed by Derek Perren singled, Templeton scored on a passed ball, Kaplan advanced Perren to third base with a groundout, and Wilver Perez plated a run with a base hit for a 7-0 lead.
Again scoring in an even numbered inning Calgary plated two tallies in the sixth for a 9-0 advantage as Miller walked, Templeton singled, and after a wild pitch both scored on a Perez ground ball that was unable to be fielded.
The Vipers added in run in the eighth frame when Chad Ehrnsberger singled, Quintana doubled, Miller walked to load the bases, and Templeton collected a sacrifice fly for a 10-0 score.
Yuma broke the shutout in the ninth as Joey Gathright walked while Patrick Brooks and Jonathon Jaspe both singled for a 10-1 final.
Jose Canseco is expected to be in the lineup for the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday August 21st as the series wraps up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th against the Edmonton Capitals.
