Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 21-11) won their third straight game over the Lake County Captains (41-29, 12-20) on Tuesday night with a 5-4 win in 10 innings. Angel Villalona connected for the walk-off homer and Dan Turpen recorded the win in relief.
Villalona connected for his 12 home run of the season with one out in the 10 inning off of Captains reliever Dallas Cawiezell.
Turpen (5-4) worked two shutout innings in relief allowing two hits and one walk.
The GreenJackets took a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning but the Captains scored three runs off of starter Madsion Bumgarner then got another run off the David Mixon to tie the game at 4-4. The Captains were helped out by a passed ball on catcher Matt Klimas, a wild pitch from Mixon and a fielding error from Angel Villalona in the frame.
Bumgarner had worked seven shutout innings before starting the eighth inning allowing a walk and consecutive singles to break up the shutout. Bumgarner allowed three runs, two earned on five hits while walking two and striking out six for the no-decision.
Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Shan Jordan struck out to lead off the inning but reached first on passed ball. Jordan then moved up to second on a ground out, tagged up and went to third on a pop out to deep left field then scored on a wild pitch.
Andrew Davis led off the fourth inning with his first home run of the season to give Augusta a 2-0 lead.
The GreenJackets added two more runs in the sixth inning when Villalona scored on a throwing error from right-fielder Matt Brown and a two-out RBI single from Klimas.
The GreenJackets and Captains finish their series on Wednesday night with Augusta looking for the sweep and sending right-hander Daryl Maday (8-4, 1.47) to the mound as he sports the best ERA among all pitchers in the Minor Leagues at the full season level. Lake County will send right-hander Joanniel Montero (1-3, 4.79) to the hill. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
