'Dads offense stagnant in loss
Published on July 22, 2008 under South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory lost to Delmarva, 5-1, Thursday, running the Crawdads' current losing streak to eight straight games. The current slide matches Hickory's longest losing skid of 2008, as the 'Dads also dropped eight in a row from June 4-12. The seven consecutive home losses, meanwhile, comprise the longest such slide for Hickory as far as records go back, including the 2005 season.
The Crawdads (11-21, 41-61) actually scored first in Thursday's action, as a Ronald Pena fielder's choice scored Erik Huber in the second inning.
But while Hickory would not score the remainder of the game, Delmarva (18-14, 56-45) would tack two runs on in both the fourth and fifth inning, with an insurance tally in the ninth.
The Shorebirds used a balanced attack to sink the Crawdads, as five different runners scored the runs and four separate players notched RBIs.
Starting pitcher Duke Welker took the loss for Hickory, dropping to 2-8 after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings. Welker did strike out six against just one walk.
Shorebirds starter Zach Britton allowed one unearned run on two hits in six innings, earning the win and improving to 10-5. Robert Neigebauer pitched the final three innings of the game for his first save of the year.
Hickory looks to salvage a win to end the homestand Wednesday at noon, playing Delmarva for the final time in 2008.
The 'Dads send RHP Matt McSwain (3-3, 2.05 ERA) to face 'Birds RHP Sean Gleason (6-1, 3.02 ERA).
