Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Returning to Royal Athletic Park for a second night in a row, the Victoria Seals locked horns with Na Koa Ikaika Maui in game two of a five-game set on Saturday night. With the visitors turning to Donald Brandt (0-0) on the hill, Victoria handed the ball to Seattle native Aaron Trolia (0-0) on a chilly night in the Pacific Northwest.
Na Koa Ikaika jumped on the board first in the top half of the second inning when a single from Keoni Ruth set up a two-run home run off the bat of Mark Okano, as the Hawaiian native notches the first round-tripper in franchise history.
After Chris Van Rossum drove home his first run of the year to cut the Maui lead in half in the bottom of two, the visitors stretched their lead to 4-1 with the help of another home run blast - this time courtesy of catcher Phil Avlas.
Putting the game away in the top half of the fourth inning, a two run double from Rex Rundgren was followed up by another two-run homer by Fehlandt Lentini that sailed over the scoreboard, Na Koa Ikaika closed out the fourth frame with an 8-2 lead.
Adding insult to injury in the sixth, Maui capitalized on a bases-loaded situation as Michael Higa picked up a two-run base hit off of Seals reliever Anthony Pluta. Pushing their lead to 12 runs in the top of the ninth inning, back-to-back doubles from Gered Mochizuki and Jowen Murray-Thornton combined with a triple from Keoni Ruth made the score 14-2 Maui.
With the game out of reach, Victoria native Charlie Strandlund finished off the scoring on the night after collecting his first career single, sneaking home on a wild pitch late in the game. Stranding a total of 12 runners on base, the Seals fall in game two of their season by a 14-3 final score.
Aaron Easton is charged with his first loss of the season after allowing eight runs on six hits, while Donald Brandt improves to 1-0 with a five-inning performance on the mound. Five different batters finished the game with two RBI's for Maui, while Keoni Ruth's 3-for-5 outing paced the visitors en route to the first win in club history.
Game three of this series against Maui goes tomorrow afternoon, a 1:35 p.m. start time for Thrifty's Family Sunday at Royal Athletic Park. The contest will also be broadcast live online at www.victoriaseals.ca, and in the ballpark on 88.1 FM. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
