Orange County Flyers News Release

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Starter Jesse Smith struck out nine batters and former Major Leaguer Ben Johnson smashed his third homerun in two games as the Flyers pulled away from the RoadRunners with a 12-5 win at Bruce Hurst Field on Saturday. Orange County improved to 2-0 on the year.

Smith (1-0) accomplished a rare feat in the third, striking out four batters in the inning. Having already fanned two batters, he struck out former Flyer Jermy Acey who advanced to first when the wild pitch bounced away from the catcher. One batter later, Smith struck Yosvanny Almario for his fourth strike out of the inning.

One night after getting into an early 6-0 hole, the Flyers returned the favor. Orange County struck first in the top of the second when Jimmy Rohan drove in Jim Goethals. One batter later, former big-leaguer Keith Ginter drew a bases-loaded walk from RoadRunners starter Reed Dickert (0-1), giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead. In total, RoadRunners pitchers walked 13 Flyers in the game.

In the fourth inning, leadoff hitter Steve Boggs doubled to get on base. Two batters later, Ginter - former Major Leaguer and Fullerton High School alum - doubled home Boggs. Ben Johnson blasted his third homerun of the year, a two-run shot to cash Ginter and give Orange County a 5-0 lead.

The RoadRunners tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Casey Raisbeck.

Orange County pulled away in the sixth, with a 12-batter parade that resulted in seven runs, including a two-run double by starting pitcher Jesse Smith. The RoadRunners responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, drawing four walks off Smith in the frame. Smith finished the game with 5.1 innings pitch, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out nine and walking six.

Former National League All-Star and World Series Champion pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning. He is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the RoadRunners in the series finale. Brandon Pulled pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close the game.

The Flyers and RoadRunners are off Sunday and will continue this four-game series Monday as the Flyers' Brett Smith takes the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm Pacific at Bruce Hurst Field. The game can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
