Tucson Toros News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals avoided the sweep by pulling off 5-4 win over the Toros in 14 innings Saturday night.
The Edmonton Capitals once again got off to an early lead in the 1st inning, a common theme in the series, after a walk to RF Larry Bigbie and a home run by CF Jorge Cortes put the Capitals up 2-0. The Capitals would add another run in the 4th to go up 3-0 after hitting three straight singles by 1B Tom Collaro, 2B Eric McNamee and C Pete Farina.
In the 5th inning the Toros struck back with a pair of runs. 1B Cristobal Santana walked in the 5th and scored on a triple by SS Ryan Priddy to deep left center field. The 3-bagger was the fourth for the Toros in 4 games this season. P James Garcia added another run with an RBI single to bring the Toros within one. The hit was the first for a Toros pitcher this season. Garcia got the job done on the mound as well, posting a quality start with just 3 runs allowed in 6 innings of work in his Toros debut.
For the second time in the series, Tucson came from behind to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th and the clubs held each other in check with the score 3-3 all the way until the 14th. It was all hands on deck as each club used six pitchers. The bullpen was stellar once again, with a combined 12 strikeouts. Emiliano Fruto struck of the side for the second time in as many days, Andrew Snowdon fanned 3 in 3 more scoreless innings and Toby Nordman pitched in his fourth straight game.
The Capitals finally pushed in 2 runs in the top of the 14th on 4 consecutive 2-out singles off of Nordman. OF Josh Womack responded in the bottom of the frame by crushing a solo home run over the left field wall in the 14th to bring the Toros within one but that's where the score remained.
Tucson finished the series 3-1 against the Capitals, earning their first series victory of the season and jumping out into first place in the GBL Southern Division.
The Toros begin a three game series at home against the Calgary Vipers starting Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. The game can be heard live on COOL 1450 AM or video streaming over the internet at www.tucsontoros.com.
