Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - It is with deepest sympathy the Edmonton Capitals and the entire Edmonton Oilers organization extend their condolences to the family of Jose Lima. The 37 year old passed away suddenly in his home in Los Angeles. The charismatic right-handed pitcher joined the Capitals midway through the 2009 season and instantly became a fan favourite. Lima played 20 seasons of professional baseball in all parts of North America, Korea as well as Winter Ball in his home country, the Dominican Republic . He reached the pinnacle of his career when he won 21 games with the Houston Astros in 1999 and earned a spot in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Capitals Field Manager Brent Brent Bowers played with Jose Lima in Rookie and Class âA' ball together in the early stages of their careers and re-united in the Dominican Winter Baseball League where Bowers managed and Lima played for many years throughout the prime of his career. That's ultimately how Lima ended up as an Edmonton Capital.
"Jose and I go a long way back." stated a shocked Bowers. "We were teammates, I've played against him, I've managed him and it was an honour and a privilege to work with a true professional. I'm going to miss him."
We extend our condolences to the Lima family who mourn the loss of a beloved father, a spirited competitor and one of the true characters to ever play the game.
