Capitals Capture First Victory In A Marathon

May 23, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals played their longest game of the young 2010 season Saturday night in Tucson. The almost four and a half hour marathon ended in the 14th inning. The Caps finally went ahead when Steve Brown singled home the winning run with runners on the corners and two out. It was their thirteenth hit of the contest against the sixth Toros pitcher. They added an insurance run the next batter and they needed it. Josh Womack launched a solo shot to lead-off the home half of the inning but Edmonton held on for the 5 - 4 victory.

The Capitals actually played well enough to win all four games in their first series of the season on the road. However, the Toros kept finding ways to win and Edmonton needed that victory to avoid the sweep. The Caps had a 3 - 2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning only to let the Toros tie it up and set the stage for the late inning heroics.

Cliff Brumbaugh got Edmonton out on the right foot with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Chris Little did his part in six innings of work allowing just four hits and giving up just two runs.

Edmonton's 1 - 3 to start the season and will look to keep it going in Yuma against the Scorpions who are managed by former Capital and minor league great Darryl Brinkley. The Scorpions are 2 - 2 so far this year after splitting a series with the Calgary Vipers.

The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. The Caps Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1 at TELUS Field. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
