Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones and manager Tim Doherty have announced that former St. Louis Cardinal Rico Washington will return to the T-Bones for the 2011 season.
Washington, 31, played in 87 games with Kansas City in 2010, hitting .268/.352/.399 with nine home runs and 48 RBI. The veteran slugger walked 43 times while striking out just 45 during the campaign. He also stole a career-high 18 bases, a mark that was three times higher than his previous best set with Double-A Montgomery in 2005.
"Rico is a quality player who brings veteran leadership to our clubhouse," Doherty said. "He gives us a solid option in the middle of our lineup, and is one of the better defenders at third base. We anticipate an MVP-type season from him in 2011."
Washington was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 10th round of the 1997 amateur draft. After six seasons in the Pirates organization, Washington spent two seasons with the San Diego Padres and one with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before joining the Cardinals in 2006. He made his major league debut as a pinch-hitter on April 1, 2008 and went three-for-19 (.158) in 14 games with the Cardinals during the 2008 season.
The T-Bones begin their 2011 campaign in El Paso, TX on May 12 and will host the Gary SouthShore RailCats in their home opener on May 17. Season ticket packages and mini plans are available now by calling 913-328-5618. For information on group outings, call 913-328-5623.
