Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that the baseball club has purchased the contract of infielder Amos Ramon from the Lake County Fielders of the North American League and signed him to a contract for the 2011 season.
Ramon, 27, was an all-star third baseman for the Fielders last season after hitting .316 with eight home runs and 57 RBI in 92 games. His batting average was 10th in the Northern League and he turned in a sparkling .950 fielding percentage at the hot corner.
"He did a fantastic job playing third base for Lake County and really became an offensive threat last year," Forney said. "There were a lot of extra base hits from him and he has the ability to hit in multiple positions in the lineup. I like his versatility that way."
Ramon started his professional career with the Goldeyes in 2006 when he appeared in 10 games, after completing his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech. He hit .303 and added five RBI in those 10 games.
The following two seasons Ramon played with the Windy City Thunderbolts in the Frontier League and won a championship there in 2007 with Goldeyes pitching coach Brendan Sagara. In addition to his duties in the infield with Windy City, Ramon went a combined 10-6 in 37 games as a pitcher in 2007 and 2008, including starting 21 games.
In 2009, Ramon spent his third season in the Frontier League, this time with Kalamazoo. He hit .327 with the Kings and added eight home runs and 59 RBI.
Born in Corpus Christi, Tex., the newlywed Ramon now resides year-round in Winnipeg with his wife, Duong.
The Goldeyes now have eight players signed for the 2011 American Association season, including three pitchers and five position players.
Season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2011 season are available by calling the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273) or visiting www.goldeyes.com.
