Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, March 5, 2013) - The Colorado Rapids announced today that veteran English journalist and broadcaster Richard Fleming will join the club as its new Director of Broadcasting, a role which includes serving in the play-by-play role for telecasts on Altitude. A journalist with nearly 25 years of experience in print, radio and television, Fleming comes to the Rapids having most recently done commentary for Arsenal's television broadcasts and website.
"Bringing Richard into the Rapids is a great step forward, and one that will be noticed immediately by our fans and the whole soccer community in Colorado," said Rapids President Tim Hinchey. "As a soccer journalist, he has vast experience from throughout the world, and in recent years he has spent a great deal of time with our partner club, Arsenal. In addition, his longtime interest in MLS and a dedication to doing insightful and thorough coverage of the Rapids makes him a perfect fit for our club."
"I'm absolutely delighted to be joining the Rapids and Altitude TV, and really excited about getting started," said Fleming. "The opportunity that came along with the Rapids was one that afforded me the chance to head in a direction that I've been looking to go in for a number of years, and it was too good an opportunity to turn down."
In his role as Director of Broadcasting for the Colorado Rapids, Fleming will be a fixture on Rapids broadcasts on Altitude, taking play-by-play duties alongside color commentator Marcelo Balboa. Fleming's first match with the Rapids and Altitude will be the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup match on March 16 at Real Salt Lake, with Mike Haynes filling in for this Saturday's Home Opener against Philadelphia. Fleming will also contribute to other Rapids programming on Altitude, hosting the pregame show on the network, and will generate web content for both the Rapids and Altitude. An experienced soccer journalist and commentator, Fleming will use his writing experience to provide unique content to www.ColoradoRapids.com and the Rapids' fan engagement site, the Undercurrent.
A native of Camberley, Surrey, Fleming started in sports journalism in 1989 in local newspapers in southern England, covering league football and other sports. After six years in newspapers and another five in local radio on the BBC, Fleming moved to the BBC World Service in London in 2000 and traveled the world covering major sporting events, including two FIFA World Cups, the Confederations Cup, five African Cup of Nations, European Championships, as well as three MLS Cups. Since leaving the BBC in 2011, Fleming has done freelance work for several organizations, including Arsenal TV, the ITF, the London 2012 Olympics, IMG, Perform Media, Chelsea Radio, TennisTV, ESPN and the Tennis Radio Network.
The Rapids host the Philadelphia Union this Saturday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. MT in the club's Home Opener. For more information on the team, or to purchase tickets, visit www.ColoradoRapids.com or call 303-825-GOAL.
