Verrier's Homer Leads Owlz

(Grand Junction, CO) Jose Verrier crushed a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth, helping the Owlz (14-30) snap a seven-game losing streak, beating the Grand Junction Rockies (23-21) 6-3 on Thursday night at Suplizio Field.

The Owlz scored first for the fourth consecutive game, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Will Wilson opened the inning with a single and then moved to second when Johan Sala walked with one out. After David Clawson walked to load the bases, Verrier singled to center, scoring Wilson, giving the Owlz a 1-0 lead. Morgan McCullough then drew a bases loaded walk, extending the Owlz lead to 2-0.

After the Rockies the made it a one-run game on a Cristopher Navarro double, the Owlz got their two-run cushion back in the fifth inning. With one out, Verrier was hit by a pitch and moved to second on McCullough walk, after Brandon White walk loaded the bases, Justin Kunz gave the Owlz a 3-1 lead in his Owlz debut driving in Verrier with a sacrifice fly to right.

Christian Koss tied the game in the sixth inning, blasting a two-run homer to left. The Owlz took the lead back in the ninth inning. With one out, David Clawson singled and the Verrier belted his seventh home run of the season, giving the Owlz a 5-3 lead. The Owlz added another run on a Rockies error, pushing the Owlz lead to 6-3.

Andrew Blake (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to earn his first professional win. Ever Moya was charged with the loss. The Owlz walked 13 times in the game, two shy of their season of 15 set back on June 16th against the Rocky Mountain Vibes. The Owlz and the Rockies wrap up Friday night at 6:40 at Suplizio Field.
