IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- The Billings Mustangs (6-2, 21-24) and Idaho Falls Chukars (2-6, 22-22) split a doubleheader Friday with the Mustangs taking game one 9-1 before the Chukars won in shutout fashion 3-0 in game two in front of 3,133 at Melaleuca Field.
The Mustangs ran away with game one of the twin bill for their fifth consecutive win; their longest winning streak of the season.
The Billings offense was able to score in each of their seven innings at the plate in the game. They would also total four home runs as a team, two hit by Edwin Yon, for their largest single-game home run total of the season. Yon finished the game 3-for-3 with two homers, three runs scored, two RBI and a walk. His first home run traveled 457 feet while the second went 440 feet.
Carlos Carreno (3-4) threw five shutout innings in the start for Billings, giving up just three hits, walking three and striking out two. Carreno now has a win in three of his last five starts.
TJ Hopkins also extended his hitting streak to 10 games by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run, three RBI and a steal.
Idaho Falls got their first run of game two on a solo home run from Juan Carlos Negret to lead off the bottom of the second inning. It was Negret's eighth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead.
Leading 1-0 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chukars tacked on two insurance runs on the RBI singles of Negret and Isaiah Henry to make it a 3-0 advantage.
It was the second time this year the Mustangs have been held scoreless and the first time a North Division opponent has accomplished it.
Cash Case went 2-for-2 with two doubles for Billings in game two.
The Mustangs and Chukars conclude their three-game series Saturday, Aug. 3, in Idaho Falls. First pitch at Melaleuca Field is set for 7:15 p.m. MDT.
