Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- It was a wild one in more ways than one on Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

In a game that featured 10 wild pitches, a straight steal of home and blown leads by both team, the Vermont Lake Monsters outlasted the Lowell Spinners 7-6 in New York-Penn League action when Brett McMillan scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning.

After Vermont had overcome a 3-0 deficit to tie the game, a 4-3 deficit to take a 6-4 lead and after Lowell had scored two runs in the ninth to tie the game 6-6, the Lake Monsters won the game in the 10th when Brett McMillan walked and came around to score on three wild pitches by Spinner reliever Felix Ventura (2-3).

Vermont tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning as Justin Maxwell had an RBI double for the first run and then pulled off the first straight steal of home in Vermont's 13-year history to tie the game 3-3. With Lowell's Ryan Lawson pitching from the stretch with two outs, Maxwll took off from third and slid under the tag of catcher Jon Still.

Lowell retook the lead 4-3 in the seventh on a Still RBI single, but the Lake Monsters countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Jonathan Castro and Jeremy Godschmeding. Vermont added an insurance run in the eighth on a Pat Nichols two-out triple and Ryan Delaughter RBI single, but the Spinners tied the game with two runs in the ninth.

Trailing 6-5 with runners on first and third with one out, Still hit a grounder to second base for a potential game-ending double play. But the Spinner runner on first, Zach Daeges stopped when second baseman Jonathan Martinez tried to tag him. Martinez then threw to first for the out and the throw back to second got Farkes for the double play, but Zak Farkes scored to tie the game.

Delaughter, Nichols and Castro all had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Yader Peralta (2-3) struckout one in 1.2 innings to pick up his second win of season. Ryan Khoury was 3-for-4 with two runs for Lowell (20-19), while Still was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

After losing their first 21 games when their opponent scored five or more runs, the Lake Monsters have now won each of the last two days by scores of 8-7 and 7-6. The back-to-back one-run victories improve Vermont's record in one-run games to 5-6.

Vermont (14-26) continue the five-game homestand on Tuesday night when they host the Staten Island Yankees in the first of three games at Centennial. The Lake Monsters will be celebrating the "Summer of Love" sponsored by Ben & Jerry's on Tuesday with a free baseball for the first 1,000 fans.
