Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Fishkill, N.Y. (July 31, 2006) - The Staten Island Yankees tonight out-slugged the Gades in an 11-7 win at Dutchess Stadium.
After a 13-2 win at Staten Island yesterday, the Renegades were seemingly in control tonight. The Gades jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the first four innings. Leadoff hitter John Matulia ignited the offense as he scored two runs while driving in a pair of runs on a double in the fourth.
Hudson Valley starter Lewis Rollins (0-2) was on cruise control having not allowed a hit heading into the top of the fifth inning. However, the wheels came off for the Gades after a seven-hit, six run barrage by the Baby Bombers. Catcher Francisco Cervelli drove a two-run homer over the left field wall after four previous Yankee hits. Roberto Gil relieved Rollins and proceeded to allow a two-run double to Seth Fortenberry.
The Gades fought back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Maiko Loyola led off with a bunt single and Matt Fields followed with his third hit of the night. Scott Gummo's sacrifice fly to deep center knotted the score at six apiece.
The Yanks regained the lead in the sixth after Colin Curtis (3-5) knocked a two run bomb over the right field wall. Relievers Jonathan Hovis and Nick Peterson combined for 2.2 innings of one-run ball and stymied any comeback attempt from Hudson Valley.
The Renegades fell to 16-23 as the Yanks improved to 24-16 while remaining atop the McNamara division. The Gades will begin a three-game set at Lowell tomorrow.
