Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- Dustin Martin finished a home run shy of the cycle and Jon Schemmel went 3-for-5 as the Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds 6-3 to complete a three-game sweep on Monday night.
Martin and Schemmel had three of Brooklyn's 13 hits against IronBirds starter Jeff Moore and two relievers. The Cyclones scored runs in the second and third innings before adding four more runs in the fourth to put the game away.
Brooklyn's four run fourth inning began innocently when Mark Wright singled to leadoff the inning. Moore (4-1) retired the next two hitters before allowing a Joe Holden solo home run.
The inning continued with a Schemmel single and Martin followed with an RBI triple. Martin scored and Ivan Naccarata reached safely on an error before IronBirds reliever Henry Lozado coaxed Dan Cummins into a groundout to end the inning.
The IronBirds scored three runs but managed just six hits against Brooklyn starter Eric Brown. Brown (3-0) earned the win with eight strong innings and allowed just one earned run while notching eight strikeouts.
The IronBirds reached Brown with a run in the first and another in the third. Chris Vinyard hit a sac fly to score Zach Davis in the first inning. Aberdeen added a run in the third when Corey Shafer hit his second home run of the season to deep right field.
But Brown silenced the IronBirds offense and picked up his third win of the season. The IronBirds added a run in the eighth when Vinyard hit an RBI single to left score Paul Winterling but Brooklyn closer Jose De La Torre worked the ninth for his third save and second in as many nights.
The IronBirds committed four errors, tying a season high.
