Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA - The Lake Monsters offensive woes continued on Wednesday night as Vermont was shutout for the fourth time in last five games as the Lowell Spinners picked up their second straight 1-0 New York-Penn League victory on a Xavier LeGrant one-out bases loaded walkoff single in the bottom of ninth inning at LeLecheur Park.
Vermont has now lost each of its last five games and have scored just one run over its last 49 innings dating back fifth inning on Friday. The Lake Monsters did not put a runner in scoring position Wednesday until the eighth inning, but left runners on second-and-third with one out after a groundout and strikeout.
Lake Monsters starter Hogan Harris struckout each of the first six batters he faced and eight of first nine (leadoff groundout in third inning). After a leadoff single in fourth, the 2018 third-round pick wrapped up his 60-pitch start with a forceout and popout.
Lowell starter Yasel Santana allowed just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings, while reliever Hildemaro Requena (3-0) one hit, one walk and two strikeouts over the final three innings to earn the victory.
Vermont reliever Clark Cota had retired five straight Spinners into the ninth inning, but with one out hit Wil Dalton before issuing back-to-back walks to load the bases. Calvin Coker came on in relief of Cota to give up the LeGrant walkoff single on an 0-1 pitch.
Michael Woodworth had two of four hits in the game for Vermont (8-11), which is hitting just .145 (22-for-152) during the five-game losing streak to lower the team batting average to .200 overall. Reliever Jorge Martinez gave up one hit with four strikeouts over three innings for the Lake Monsters, while LeGrant had two of the four hits for Lowell (14-4).
Vermont will look to rebound from the three-game sweep at Lowell as they head to Connecticut for a three-game series starting Thursday at 7:05pm. The Lake Monsters return home after the six-game roadtrip on Sunday.
