Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Tyler Marincov went 3-for-3 with a double, solo homer and two RBI as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to take the lead with a three-run seventh inning in a 6-4 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
Aberdeen scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a Trey Mancini sacrifice fly and a Manny Hernandez RBI single before adding an unearned run in the second and a Hector Veloz solo home run in the third for a 4-0 lead. All four runs came off Vermont starter Brent Powers, who pitched the first four innings to become the Lake Monsters career leader in innings pitched with 157 (Pierre-Luc Marceau tossed 155 2/3 innings for Vermont in 2001 and 2002).ÃâÃÂ
The Lake Monsters began their rally in the bottom of the third with a pair of RBI doubles from Josh Miller and Boog Powell before Marincov cut the deficit to 4-3 with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning for his first home run of the season. Marincov, who also doubled in the sixth inning, is now 12-for-27 (.444) in his last eight games to raise his average from .167 to .275 overall.
Luis Baez started the seventh inning rally with a leadoff single and advanced to third on a one-out Melvin Mercedes single to left. Powell followed with a safety squeeze bunt single to score Baez with the game-tying run and Jaycob Brugman gave Vermont the lead with a double down the leftfield line to score Mercedes with the go ahead run. A Marincov sac fly to leftfield scored Powell with an insurance run for a 6-4 lead.
Derek Hansen (2-2) tossed three innings of scoreless relief for the victory, allowing two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. After Vermont took the lead, Sam Bragg picked his second save with one strikeout in two scoreless innings. It is the second time this season that the Lake Monsters have rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a win, the other a 7-4 win at Connecticut on July 6th, and the second win when trailing after six innings (2-15).
Powell, Miller and Ryan Huck each had two hits for Vermont (13-17), which collected a Centennial Field season-high 13 hits (bettering the previous high of nine hits). Jeff Kemp was 3-for-5 with a run for Aberdeen (16-13), while reliever Alex Santana (0-1) was charged with three runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings for the loss.
The Lake Monsters and Ironbirds will play the finale of the three-game series on Friday night at Centennial Field starting at 7:05 pm. It is "Summer of Love" night at the ballpark with the first 750 fans receiving a Ben & Jerry's themed baseball and fans encouraged to come dressed in their best 1960's and 1970's style outfits.
