State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Steven Ramos collected four hits and extended his hitting streak to 12 games, but the State College Spikes dropped a 4-3 nailbiter to the Lowell Spinners on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Ramos joined Jimmy Bosco, Bruce Caldwell, Ronald Castillo and Cesar Valera as Spikes (15-14) to have produced four-hit games on the 2013 season. The 12-game hitting streak for the State College outfielder is the longest ongoing string in the New York-Penn League, trailing only a 17-game streak by Aberdeen's Jared Breen for the longest overall streak on the year.
The Spikes took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on Bosco's RBI single and a successful squeeze bunt single by Ramos, but Lowell (17-12) responded by putting the first five batters on base to plate a trio of runs and take a lead they would not relinquish. Spinners right fielder Aaron King landed the biggest blow with a two-run homer to right-center field in the middle of the flurry.
Carson Kelly also contributed three hits for State College. The Spikes outhit Lowell in the game, 14-9, despite being on the short end of the score.
Andrew Pierce started for State College and went a career long five innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Jhonny Polanco (0-2) followed him and took the loss after allowing all three of the Spinners' sixth-inning runs without recording an out. Polanco gave up a total of two hits and three walks on the night.
The Spikes' pitching staff struck out 11 batters on the night, led by Jacob Booden's five in the sixth and seventh innings.
Lowell reliever Simon Mercedes (2-1) picked up the win. Mercedes allowed two runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out five in the process. Matt Maloney (1), on rehab assignment with the Spinners after four years of major league experience with the Reds and Twins, got the save after giving up one unearned run on two hits and striking out three.
Friday, the Spikes face the Spinners in the rubber match of their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Juan Bautista (0-2) on the mound for State College. Lowell will go with right-hander Jamie Callahan (1-1).
The ballpark fun, presented by WJAC, features a Mystery Gift Card Giveaway to a group of lucky fans who will be drawn during the game to receive a random gift card that they will choose from the card bag.
Plus, it's a 4 for $44 Friday, presented by T.G.I. Friday's and MAJIC 99. Purchase four Diamond Club seats, four hot dogs and four small sodas for just $44 (a $63 value).
