State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES HOME TO FACE FUTURE RED SOX: The State College Spikes, who are number one in the New York-Penn League in batting average at .283 and ERA at 2.47, continue a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight with the middle game of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Spikes are currently tied for second place in the Pinckney Division, 1 1/2 games back of Jamestown, while Lowell stands second in the Stedler Division, three games back of Tri-City, the team with the NYPL's best record. State College is 10-10 all-time against the Spinners and has won seven of ten at home when facing Lowell.

-LAST GAME: Bruce Caldwell became the fourth State College Spikes player to produce four hits in a single game as the Spikes stopped a five-game skid with an 8-2 win over the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Caldwell scored a run and knocked in a run with his four singles in five at-bats. State College was also bolstered by a strong pitching effort from Nick Petree and Jimmy Reed, who went the entire game between them. Petree started and went five innings for his first professional win, while Reed followed with four one-run innings for the save, and tied the Spikes' season high mark for strikeouts in a game with six.

-PIERCE GOES TO THE MOUND FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Andrew Pierce gets the ball for State College tonight against the Spinners. Pierce is coming off of a shortened outing last Thursday against Aberdeen in which he went 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman to receive his first pro loss. The Stringer, MS native and 2013 eighth-round draft choice of the Cardinals is making just his second home start in five outings on the season, and went a career long 3 2/3 innings two outings ago against Batavia.

-SPINNERS GO WITH LITTRELL & MERCEDES: Left-hander Corey Littrell, a fifth-round draft pick of the Red Sox in 2013, leads off a tandem on the hill for Lowell this evening. Littrell, selected out of the University of Kentucky, has gone two innings in each of his first two starts, and has not yet allowed a run as a pro. The southpaw will be followed by right-hand Simon Mercedes, who started the year in the rotation before becoming Littrell's partner on the hill. Mercedes has gone five innings or more in four of his five appearances.

-SPIKES WIELDING BIG BATS IN 2013: The Spikes are among the New York-Penn League's leaders in a multitude of hitting categories, including a .283 batting average to lead in the league, 153 runs scored to place first in the NYPL, and a .415 slugging average to lead the loop. State College has compiled 14 games with 10 hits or more, including three in which the Spikes have exceeded 15 hits.
