Venuto's Overtime Tally Lifts Dubuque 3-2
February 22, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
Antonio Venuto scored the overtime winner with 15 seconds left in the extra period and the Dubuque Fighting Saints earned a hard-fought two points against Muskegon on Saturday night. The win was the first of the weekend for the Saints as they snapped a three-game losing streak with their fourth win of the season over Muskegon.
-Venuto scored his second goal of the weekend, snapping a wrister from the high-slot past Jon Williams. Venuto's goal was his 15th of the season and his fifth game-winning goal of the year.
- Another Saints Lumberjacks game produced another tight finish. Much like last season, when all four games were decided by one goal, this weekend series in Muskegon look similarly tight. The Saints did well to push through with their extra point in the third game of a three in three.
-Dubuque was much tougher to play against defensively in this game and didn't allow a big period to bite them. Muskegon had a few decent chances but couldn't control zone time as much as they did last night.
-Erik Portillo bounced back strong from a shaky outing against Team USA. Portillo stopped 21 of 23 shots on his way to the victory. He made one of his best stops all season, robbing Rhett Pitlick with his blocker early on in the third period.
-Despite the loss, Muskegon was still able to take three of four points from the two seed in the East. The Lumberjacks strong weekend gives them a slight lead over CR in the standings, but they will need to produce a few more weekends of this caliber to be comfortable in the 6th slot of higher.
-Kaelan Taylor became the fifth Fighting Saint to skate in their 100th game this season. Taylor joins Aidan Fulp, Dylan and Ty Jackson and Riese Gaber as the five players who have hit 100 USHL games.
-Gaber scored his 32nd goal of the season and now is all over multiple milestone watches. Gaber is one point away from 100, he sits two goals away from the all-time lead in Tier-1 history with Dubuque and he needs six more to hold the single-season record as well.
-Up next for Dubuque, two home dates. On Friday it's a visit from the Sioux City Musketeers and Saturday it's a matchup against Sioux Falls.
