Phantoms Overcome Hawks' Comeback

The Youngstown Phantoms conjured up an answer to the Waterloo Black Hawks' third period rally and escaped from Young Arena with a 5-3 victory on Friday.

Trevor Kuntar scored two unassisted goals in the third period to help the visitors stave off the Hawks. With Youngstown already leading 2-1 coming out of intermission, the teams were skating four-on-four. At 1:35, Kuntar got to a loose puck in the Waterloo zone at blasted it in from the left circle. He scored again at 11:15, swiping the puck while forechecking near the extended goal line and squeezing a shot between goalie Gabriel Carriere and the post, from a sharp angle.

The second Kuntar goal broke a 3-3 tie and proved to be the game-winner.

Two Waterloo defensemen had brought the Hawks back even temporarily, starting at 5:43. After a pileup near the front of the Phantom's net, no one could seem to locate the loose puck just outside the crease; Nic Belpedio got there from the left point in time to flick a shot inside the post.

Just over three minutes later, Luke Bast fired in a one-timer from the high slot, set up by Aaron Bohlinger, beating Youngstown netminder Dominic Basse low to the glove side.

However, the teams were level for only a little more than two minutes before Kuntar's go-ahead score. Jacob Felker added an empty net goal with 32.9 seconds remaining.

Youngstown had seized the lead with two late first period special team's scores.

At 16:08 of the first, Kuntar connected with Matthew Cassidy for a redirection from the side of the net during a power play. Then at 18:36 Josh DeLuca forced a turnover at center which led to a shorthanded goal by Garrett Dahm.

Waterloo's Griffin Ness scored the only goal in the second, thanks to a Wyatt Schingoethe takeaway. Schingoethe surprised a Youngstown defender, then slid a pass across the slot to Ness, who scored into an open side at 1:59.

The Hawks are back on home ice Saturday versus the USHL-leading Chicago Steel at 7:05 p.m.
