Steel Win Matchup of Top Teams

The Chicago Steel pulled away to a 5-2 win at Young Arena against the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday night in a matchup of United States Hockey League conference leaders.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine led the way for the top team in the Eastern Conference, scoring twice and adding an assist, as the Steel prevailed despite being outshot 39-26.

The Western Conference-leading Black Hawks went ahead first, 5:28 into the contest. Ondrej Psenicka sped past a defender through the left circle and went to the top of the crease to beat Victor Ostman with a backhander.

Waterloo's only lead of the game lasted just over two minutes.

Sam Colangelo tied the scored at 7:31, weaving through the Hawks' zone before slipping a shot past Logan Stein's left skate. Fontaine then helped send the Steel to the lead with an assist on Mackie Samoskevich's power play goal at 14:21.

Much of the second period was played as a tie game thanks to Xander Lamppa, who converted a rebound chance 2:40 after intermission. However, Elis Hede snapped a wrist shot to the twine from the right hashmark with 2:20 left to play in the middle frame, putting Chicago back ahead.

Fontaine gave the Steel their first two-goal lead during a power play at 7:55 of the third when he scored over Stein's glove from the right faceoff dot. He then added an empty-netter with 55.3 seconds on the game clock.

The Hawks travel east of the Mississippi River for the final time in 2019/20 next weekend for games against USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday and Saturday respectively.
